Vascular neurosurgery
Acute brain and spinal cord haemorrhaging can be dramatic, and not infrequently fatal. The causes lie in dilation of the blood vessels (aneurysma), vascular malformation (angioma) or hemangiomas (blood vessel-rich tumours) and cavernomas (varicose-type vascular deformation). Removal of the source of bleeding through micro-surgical closure of the aneurysma, or resectioning of the angioma, haemangioma or cavernoma can avert the risk of renewed bleeding and allow the patient to recover. Intervention can be helpful in such cases, or may in fact be the actual treatment of choice.
