Neurovascular compression syndrome, pain management
Compression of the cranial nerves by blood vessels leads to a variety of neurological disorders, all of which respond very well to treatment using microsurgery. These include trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngial neuralgia and disabling vertigo. Microsurgical removal of the vessel-nerve conflict results in immediate freedom from the symptoms. When treating trigeminal neuralgia in cases of multiple sclerosis, thermo-coagulation of the Gasserian ganglion is the method of choice. In cases of phantom pain caused by tearing of the brachial plexus, a significant reduction in the pain intensity level can be obtained by coagulation of the substantia grisea (as described by Nashhold).
